Rucking is walking with a weighted backpack. The term originates from "Ruck" or "Rucksack". Rucksacks are backpacks designed for heavy loads, like those worn in the military. Rucking is the same as hiking, only you are carrying specific amount of weight to create more of a workout versus hauling luggage or equipment making rucking more of an intent challenge.
NO you do not need to be qualified for the military.
NO you don't need fancy equipment.

However, you can bring your own bag and/or weights.
During the early 100s B.C., Roman general and statesman, Gaius Marius, reformed the military in multiple ways. One of these ways involved slimming down the baggage trains. Instead of using animals and larger equipment during their expedition, Marius made his men carry all supplies (armor, food, weapons, etc). This allowed the army to move faster, use less resources, and later, become stronger and more fit for battle. Once the understanding became incredibly apparent, soldiers would take much more pride in the amount of weight they could carry and would call themselves "Marius' Mules".
This practice carried on into the Roman Empire and is STILL a key proponent. The Candidates for Delta force are required to march with a 45lb rucksack for up to 50 miles of rough terrain to qualify. Other elite military units such as Navy SEALs and Green Berets have similar rucking requirements today.
